Why do you not recommend the Pure Sports Realtor Tires?

As I did with the AMP Link, I read in the magazines that the Realtors were really good tires for peole that ride in many different conditions. I was in dire need of a new set of rear tread, and the Realtor caught my eye because on any given day, I might be at the sand dunes, and the next day on hard pack fire roads. Being young and stupid, and listening to the review in the magazine article, I decided to buy them. If you aren't catching a theme here, its really simple: DON'T BELIEVE EVERY THING THE MAGAZINES SAY!! THEY HAVE OTHER MOTIVES FOR SAYING WHAT THEY SAY!! If you can, ask other riders for the REAL scoop on new products.

So, heres the deal:

  • The tires work OK in soft stuff when they are new. They do not compare to paddles in sand!
  • Realtors flat out SUCK in hard pack! There is simply way too much space between the lugs to get any rubber on the ground.
  • The above problem is compounded on gravel roads. Gravel roads need lots of edges to bite the harder dirt under the gravel. I can take off on a gravel road and go all the way up to 6th gear and spin the tires for a quarter mile before it finally gets up to speed and stops slipping!
  • Realtors work fair in firm dirt. Nothing to get excited about. Most tires work decent in firm dirt.
  • Mud: I guess they aren't too bad. I couldn't tell you tho, I don't ride in mud bogs. Sorry.
  • Snow: Actually, this is one area where they aren't half bad. The width and paddle like lugs shovel lots of snow.

So, why wouldn't I buy them? My philosophy is simple: think of what condition you do most of your riding in, and buy the BEST tire for that condition. That way, you have a tire that is perfect for most of your riding even tho it might only be mediocre the rest of the time. Trust me, its much better than having a tire that is mediocre ALL the time as I discoverd the Realtors were. If you do most of your riding in sand, I HIGHLY recomend buying paddles (even cheep ones) and haveing two sets of wheels and tires. There is simply no replacement for paddles in sand.
